His friends form a loose confederation: a retired schoolteacher who speaks in aphorisms and half-remembered poems; a young woman trying to escape provincial expectations while remaining tethered by family duty; an aspiring filmmaker whose camera is always half-focused on the world and half-focused on his own anxieties; and a petty local politician whose ambitions are disproportional to his competence.
