The film takes place in Middle-earth, 60 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings. The story follows Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), a hobbit who joins a group of dwarves on a quest to reclaim their treasure from the dragon Smaug. The dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), aim to retake their homeland, Erebor, which was conquered by Smaug.
