Children’s animation has long relied on clear moral divisions. However, Star vs. The Forces of Evil (SvtFoE) repeatedly blurs the line between good and evil. The protagonist, Star Butterfly, arrives on Earth as a magical princess from Mewni, tasked with fighting monsters. Yet by the series’ end, the “forces of evil” are redefined. This paper examines three narrative strategies that complicate the binary: the subversion of the monster trope, the psychological depth of villains, and Star’s own moral failings.
