The updater looked for a password, didn’t find one, and instead of thinking, "Ah, open environment," it panicked and thought, "Authentication missing – security violation." The result? The update aborted in the middle of overwriting the boot block. The motherboard was now in a state of Schrödinger's firmware: neither old nor new, but a brick.
