In the Czech and Slovak context, the translated editions ( Psychologie Atkinsonové a Hilgarda ) became mandatory reading at Charles University in Prague, Masaryk University in Brno, and Comenius University in Bratislava. During the communist era (1948–1989), Western psychology was often restricted. However, Atkinson & Hilgard was valued for its empirical rigor and relative ideological neutrality. It introduced Czech students to experimental methods, statistical reasoning, and critical thinking—skills that were sometimes suppressed by Marxist dogmatism in other disciplines. After the Velvet Revolution (1989), the textbook remained a standard reference, bridging the gap between Eastern European psychological traditions (e.g., Vygotsky’s cultural-historical theory) and Western mainstream research.
